“IDC”- RBI Methods

“IDC”-RBI is based on an in-depth evaluation of the risk of loss of integrity of confinements (RBI analysis) and an integration of RBI inspection measures into the inspection plans of the plant (RBI application).

“IDC”-RBI follows procedures defined in API 580 and used for oil & gas as well as chemical plants.

How to work out a RBI analysis?

Our RBI approach is based on a strong co-operation between the plant personnel and experts of IDC Plant Technology Sdn. Bhd. (IDC PT).

Typically a team of two IDC PT experts (moderation and system analysis) and several experts of the client are working out RBI evaluations during special workshops.

How to get RBI into practice?

RBI is a process which needs monitoring of operational conditions as well as review and updating of the RBI analysis.

For the reason of monitoring we determine as part of the RBI analysis a so called integrity operating window, which defines all important parameters which have to be monitored and controlled to keep the RBI evaluation valid. Review should be done after a reasonable time interval of some years (e.g. five years).

What are the costs and benefits of the RBI?

Generally the benefits of RBI result from the following points:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Changed inspection strategies (state/corrosion oriented) and intervals

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Reduced costs for scaffolding

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Standardized equipment of the company

<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Harmonized inspection plans (consistent shut down plans for all units of the plant).

What is the point of view of the Authorities (Malaysia)?

In Malaysia, industrial plants have the opportunity to extend the operation period in-between shut downs for inspections up to 3 years (instead of regulated 15 month).


The approval of an extended operation cycle has to be applied in DOSH, using a successfully carried out RBI study of the plant’s pressure equipments (Vessel, Boiler, piping structures etc.)

For our clients we prepare documents on the base of which the authorities may accept the plant’s RBI strategies and measures.

The extension of the pressure equipment’s operation period has become one of the main preconditions for benefiting from the RBI process.
